Abstract:

Computers are used everywhere from home to work these days, thus the effects on the visual system will be more noticeable every day. Problems associated with computer usage are generally known as the computer vision syndrome (CVS).These problems include eye fatigue, irritation, redness, blurred vision and dry eye. All of these problems have adverse effects on individuals in the long term and reduce the efficiency and quality of workers. CVS is due to various display characteristics such as screen brightness, high brightness in the workplace, screen refresh rate, radiation, reduced rate of blinking, large eye surface prone to dryness and accommodation effort for close work. Treatment requires a multidirectional approach such as adjustment of the workstation. Proper lighting, anti-glare filters, ergonomic positioning of the monitor and regular work breaks may help improve visual comfort. Lubricating eye drops and special computer glasses help relieve ocular surface related symptoms. Also the treatment of this syndrome especially in the early stages has successful result, but users that do not know about this problems, tolerate a lot of complications.

Abstract:

Introduction: The aim of this study was to determine the frequency of computer vision syndrome (CVS) and some other related factors in personal computer users in Hamadan city. Methods: 385 computer users were studied with questionnaires including signs and symptoms of CVS. Results: Duration of operating is significant to frequency of CVS and daily working time is significantly associated to frequency of CVS (P=0.0001). Monitor resolution was found to be of little value in the presence of CVS. Presence of ametropia (diplopia, presbyopia, and astigmatism) has a significant relation to frequency of CVS (P=0.001).Continuous use of glasses reduce frequency of CVS. to decrease the frequency of CVS, the level of monitor should be lower than that of the operator's eyes (P=0.0001).The most proper distance between the monitor and operator's eyes is 50-70 cm, that reduces frequency of CVS significantly (P=0.0001).Conclusion: In this investigation, the frequency of CVS in computer users In Hamadan was 72.5%. Ametropia, duration of operating, resolution of monitor height and distance of monitor from the operator's eyes and using glasses are factors related to frequency of CVS.

Abstract:

Introduction: Computer vision syndrome (CVS) is one of the most common health concerns associated with the extensive use of computers, particularly in the working environment. Since recent studies have shown the high prevalence of CVS, it is necessary to have an appropriate tool for assessing this prevalence. The present research aims to translate the CVS questionnaire and analyze its validity and reliability and assess the incidence of this condition among the staff members at Tabriz University of Medical Sciences. Material and Methods: The translation of the main questionnaire into the Persian version was carried out in three steps. Two coefficients including the content validity ratio (CVR) and the content validity index (CVI) were used to evaluate the content validity of the questionnaire. The reliability of the questionnaire was examined using two methods including internal consistency (Cronbach’s alpha) and test-retest. In total, 240 participants were asked to fulfill the questionnaire in order to investigate the prevalence rate of CVS among the staff members of Tabriz University of Medical Sciences. After removing the ineligible ones, 219 questionnaires were examined. Results: The internal consistency coefficient and Cronbach’s alpha coefficient were 0. 91 and 0. 89, respectively. Out of a total of 102 women and 117 men, only 19 women and 21 men did not have CVS. Among the studied symptoms, eye redness (78. 1%), burning (76. 7%), and headache (74%) were the most prevalent in the statistical population. No significant relationship was observed between the final score of CVS and gender. Conclusion: In terms of validity and reliability, the questionnaire was found to be satisfactory. The prevalence of CVS among the staff members of Tabriz University of Medical Sciences was high (81%). To determine the etiologies, further research is needed.
